Things to know before booking Luxor hot air balloon tours

  • Tour availability and pre-booking:  Sunrise is the only flight time in Luxor, and tours often sell out days in advance, especially in peak season from October to April. Book at least 1 week ahead to secure your preferred date.
  • What the basic tours include: Standard tickets usually include a 45 to 60 minute sunrise flight, round-trip hotel transfers from central Luxor, a licensed pilot, and refreshments after landing. Some operators also offer photos or longer airtime.
  • Big choices to make: The key decision is between the standard and premium hot air balloon experiences. The standard option includes shared transfers and the full flight experience, while the premium ride adds round-trip limousine transfers along with personalized in-flight photos and videos. If you’re celebrating a special occasion and looking for a more private, elevated experience, the premium option is worth considering.
  • Upgrades and add-ons: For a more complete Luxor experience, choose a package that pairs the sunrise hot air balloon ride with a guided tour. Premium options include expert-led visits to highlights like the Valley of the Kings, along with round-trip hotel transfers and, in some cases, lunch. This is ideal for seeing more in one seamless day.
  • Transfers and pick-up zones: All tours include hotel pick-up and drop-off, with most accommodations in Luxor covered for a smooth, door-to-door experience.
  • Restrictions to consider: Flights aren’t suitable for pregnant travelers, children under 6, or those with serious back/heart conditions. Passengers must be able to climb in and out of the basket.
  • Safety and reassurance: Licensed pilots follow Civil Aviation Authority regulations. If weather conditions (wind, visibility) are unsafe, your flight will be rescheduled or refunded.

Timings
  • Timings: Flights operate only at sunrise, when winds are calm, and visibility is best. Start times vary between 4:30am and 5:30am, depending on the season.
  • Duration: The balloon flight lasts 45–60 minutes. The entire experience takes 3-4 hours, including hotel transfers, check-in, and the safety briefing.
  • Pickup: Hotel pickup usually occurs 1 to 1.5 hours before sunrise to allow time for transfers and pre-flight preparations.
  • Early morning flights: You’ll lift off just before dawn, and for good reason—Luxor’s landscape at sunrise is something special.
  • Seasonal considerations: October to April is the best period for ballooning in Luxor due to cooler temperatures and more stable weather conditions.
  • Avoiding crowds: Weekdays tend to be less busy than weekends; booking early morning flights on weekdays can help avoid larger groups.
  • Weather impact: Summer months (May to September) can be very hot, and occasional dust storms may cause cancellations; plan accordingly.
  • Special events: During Egyptian national holidays or festivals, demand increases, so it is best to book well in advance.
Luxor Hot Air Balloon
  • Hotel pick-up: Pickup from hotels or Nile cruises on East and West Banks is included in all tickets.
  • By car: If traveling independently, Luxor International Airport is about 15 km (approximately 25 minutes) from the city center. Taxis are easily available.
  • Public transport: Early morning public transport is limited. Using the provided hotel transfer service is highly recommended for convenience.
Luxor Hot Air Balloon
  • For safety, kids under 6 aren’t allowed, and you’ll need to be able to climb into the basket (about 1.2 m high) and stand for the duration of the flight.
  • The ride is not recommended for pregnant individuals, those with heart conditions, or anyone with serious mobility issues.
  • Only small personal items are permitted on board; large bags or backpacks cannot be taken on the flight.
  • For your safety, always follow the instructions of the pilot and crew, and note that smoking is strictly prohibited near the balloon.
Luxor Hot Air Balloon
  • Launch-site facilities are basic, with simple waiting areas and restrooms.
  • Some operators offer tea, coffee, or a light breakfast while the balloon is being prepared.
  • After landing, many provide refreshments or a flight certificate before the return transfer.
Luxor Hot Air Balloon
  • Not wheelchair accessible:  Due to the design of the balloon basket and launch/landing conditions, the experience is not suitable for wheelchair users.
  • Limited mobility:  Passengers must be able to climb into the basket (approx. 1.2 meters high) and stand for the duration of the flight (45–60 minutes).
  • Not suitable for: Those with serious back or knee issues, recent surgeries, or who are pregnant are advised not to participate.
  • Assistance at launch site:  Crew members are available to offer guidance and support while boarding and disembarking, but lifting assistance cannot be provided.
  • If you're tall or carrying a camera, try to position yourself at a corner of the basket for wide-angle shots of the Nile, temples, and farmlands.
  • Pick-ups often happen before 4:30am. Arrive rested and ready for an early start.
  • Hold onto phones, hats, and cameras because takeoff and landing can be windy and bumpy.
  • Tours fill up quickly, especially during cooler months (Oct–Feb). Booking at least a week ahead is recommended.
  • Double-check your pick-up time and location with the operator a day in advance to avoid early-morning confusion.
  • Let the operator know ahead of time if you have mobility issues, vertigo, or any medical conditions that might affect your experience.
  • Don’t leave trash at the launch or landing sites, and be mindful of local customs when interacting with crew or nearby villagers.

Frequently asked questions about Luxor Hot Air Balloon Tours

How long does a Luxor hot air balloon flight last?

Your flight will last around 45 to 60 minutes, giving you plenty of time to soak up sunrise views over the Valley of the Kings, the Nile, and Luxor’s ancient temples. From lift-off to landing, you’ll be in the air long enough to capture unforgettable photos and memories.

What’s included in your Luxor hot air balloon ticket?

Your experience depends on the flight you choose. The Standard Morning Flight ($59) includes hotel transfers in an air-conditioned vehicle, a shared balloon ride with up to 32 passengers, bottled water, and a flight certificate. The Sunrise Flight ($62) offers the same perks but with an earlier start to catch that magical golden-hour glow. For the Premium Flight, enjoy round-trip limousine transfers, a smaller group experience, professional photos and videos, a personalized album, souvenirs, light refreshments, and your flight certificate.

Are hot air balloon rides in Luxor safe?

Yes! All flights are conducted by licensed pilots and professional crews. Balloons undergo regular safety checks, and flights operate only under safe weather conditions. It’s one of the safest and most magical ways to see Luxor.

Is there an age limit for hot air balloon rides?

Children above 6 years old are usually allowed to fly. For safety reasons, infants, toddlers, and pregnant guests cannot participate. Seniors with mobility challenges should consult their doctor before booking.

Are Luxor hot air balloons wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately, the baskets are not designed for wheelchair access, and guests must be able to climb in and stand for the duration of the flight. If accessibility is a concern, the ground crew will assist as much as possible with boarding.

Are food and drinks provided during the ride?

Standard flights offer bottled water only. Premium packages may include light refreshments. A full breakfast isn’t included, so we recommend having a light snack before your early morning departure.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. If wind or visibility conditions aren’t suitable, flights may be delayed or rescheduled. In case of cancellation, you’ll be offered a full refund or a chance to rebook. Clear skies mean magical views, but safety is never compromised.

What time do hot air balloon flights in Luxor start?

Morning flights usually depart around 6:30am, with hotel pickup at 5:30am. Sunrise flights take off earlier, around 5am, with pickup at 4am. These timings are designed to give you the best sunrise views.

How many people share a hot air balloon?

Standard flights carry up to 32 passengers, while premium flights have fewer people, giving you more space and personalized service.

Can I bring a camera on board?

Absolutely! Cameras and phones are welcome, and you’ll want them for the breathtaking views. Just make sure they’re secure—there’s no recovering items dropped mid-flight. Some premium flights even include a professional photographer.

So I'm giving 5 stars for the whole experience cause it really is amazing and the views and sites are great. But I just want to mention that even if it's Egypt and "scamming" happens everywhere, it would be nice to avoid it on a day trip like this. You'll be taken for lunch that description says it's included but also says it's not included at the same time and you'll end up paying 22 euros for it even if every other meal in Egypt you'd have will cost you maximum 10.

Our guide, Harmout, was exceptional in organizing this day. His clear explanations in French and his wide-ranging cultural knowledge made our understanding of history all the more enlightening. The archaeological sites are admirable. The boat trip back to our hotel added a very folkloric note to this memorable day. Thank you

The destination itself is 5 stars and when guided by the super knowledge and very personable Waleed (Egyptologist), it made for a perfect day. We were so lucky to be such a small group on this occasion which allowed us to pound Waleed with lots of questions, all of which he answered with patience and genuine knowledge. We felt the duration was just right, we had free time to wander after initial information at all sites. Thanks to Waleed.

Wonderful tour, guide did justice to her role. Every minute was utilized properly as dhe was providing more details about history. Other than history many things about locals and culture were also shared. Some of the bonus items like ice cream completed the trip after tiredness. Overall full stars and recommnded.
